Re-Naissance by Hettie Judah
Making art and making children is undoubtedly hard work. Trying to make them simultaneously is a daunting challenge. Hettie Judah, who I consider an art historical patron saint of artists/(m)others, illuminates us yet again. Her dynamically engaging online exhibition, hosted by Unit London, runs for the month of July.
Re-Naissance highlights 13 artists who have traversed this exceptionally difficult terrain to produce multi-media reflections on (m)otherhood. Hettie shines a beacon on the impact and import of these works through a multi-variant lens of culture, power and legacy.
I appreciate the powerful quotes shared by women visionaries over the past decades who unabashedly focus on the intersectional layers that form this complex matrix—and who speak truth to the crushing impact of cultural and institutionalized constructs. Any attempt to silo and compartmentalize these realities is an abomination of what it still takes to be both an artist and a (m)other.
