Larry Siegel: A 60 Year Legacy of New York and Beyond—Exhibit Opening

Larry Siegel: A 60 Year Legacy of New York and Beyond, an exhibition of photographs at the Charles P. Sifton Gallery opens on December 9, 2021 at 6:00 PM at the Charles P. Sifton Gallery, Theodore Roosevelt United States Courthouse, 225 Cadman Plaza East, Brooklyn, New York 11201.

Larry Siegel’s photographs have a poetic gentleness and a universal cosmopolitan appeal. He considered himself a street photographer who centered on the human condition. His subjects range from the simplicity of ordinary life to the sublime canvases of nature and ancient monuments. He began his interest in photography at age of 12 by buying a miniature Falcon camera through an ad he’d seen in a comic book. He began developing film in the basement with his mother’s soup plates. Inspired by colleagues, Robert Frank and David Vestal, Mr. Siegel’s long career spanned six decades as a photographer, gallery director, photo critic, and teacher.

The Gallery is dedicated to United States District Judge Charles P. Sifton in recognition of his commitment to the arts, the public’s free access to the arts, and the many excellent art exhibits and performances the Judge arranged for the Court family. Since its dedication in 2010, the exhibit space is located on the first floor. It is open to the public on weekdays from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

“I don’t find the picture, the picture finds me; all of a sudden you see it. The art of photography is in the unique act of observation in that fleeting moment. I photograph to fulfill my creative vision. Street photography for me fulfills best that vision. I strive for perfection of composition, emotion and thought to make that image.” —Larry Siegel
