Photolucida Top 50 — Critical Mass 2022
Reading 200 artist statements and viewing 2,000 images is not everyone's idea of fun. For me, jurying the Top 200 Photolucida participants it is a privilege that delivers surprises and discoveries.
Several folks I may know from our paths crossing via portfolio review, exhibitions, consultations and shared participation in the photo field. These include JP Terlizzi, Elizabeth Stone, Jo Ann Chaus, Marcus Di Sieno, Fran Forman, Eric Kunsman, Vaune Trachman, and Debe Arlook. It is so exciting to witness further refinement and exploration as I see the evolution of work expanding at the same time it is drilling deeper. For me, it never ceases to provide a thrill!
Then the icing on the metaphorical cake is all the folks I am introduced to; Brianna Dowd, Sarah Grew, Robert Kalman, Jena Love, and Fazilat Soukhakian.
The whole experience renews my faith in the power of the photo, the means to push how we see, both individually and collectively. It affirms why I do what I do, and my belief that we build connectivity and create deeper empathy, for all the way to see. As Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie professes— “there is never a single story.”
And, lastly, a shout out to two artists, who’s bodies of work I have curated into exhibitions on such deeply human stories:
Becky Wilkes and Debe Arlook.
Both highlight the strongest threads— those of caring for one another— a genderless, ageless phenomenon, and the essence of our shared humanity.
