MACRO — Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome

A reimagining of what a museum is and can be is openly and actively being investigated, explored and calculated by the ecosystem that is MACRO: a “polyphonic cultural center,” a museum for preventive imagination. Here, all viewpoints are essential, equally sought. Engagement is necessary— touch, listen, think, ponder, observe, think again. All senses are called upon to encounter, interpret and react. There is no directional or editorial interpretation, as viewers create their own path to understanding.

Photographer Giovanna Silva scoured the stored works of 1,200 pieces of art in the 50-year collection, owned by the city of Rome, to provide a direct experience. Uncovered and selected multi-media works are exhibited in conservation. Perception is animated, loudly, yet silently asking; how do you see and why does it matter? As a concept development investigator by nature, this exhibition, Retrofuture, is a mini garden of delights to explore. The blown up images of the stored collection become wallpaper, performing as the backdrop and providing context for an ever-evolving display of current Italian artists’ work.

MACRO is located at: via Nizza, 138, Roma // Lazio, Italy
