Creating Sisterhood

I virtually attended the inaugural Congress of the Women Photographers International Archive (WOPHA), Women, Photography & Feminism, last November co-presented with the Pérez Art Museum in Miami.  Published simultaneously is the international registry, Becoming Sisters: Women Photography Collectives & Organizations which features 40 collectives and like-minded organizations along with images by 100 women and non-binary creators. The Congress and this resource address Photography as a community-builidng tool, A Non-Patricarchal Model of Photography, Building a Feminine Sphere of Reception, and Creating A Meeting Place.

An international array of noted historians, artists, curators, and academics shared resources, historical data, and avenues to increase visibility while advancing critical debate on how to define feminism and the intersectionality of race, class and nation within the field of photography. Here is a sampling of my screenshots as I listened to luminaries including Ariella Azoulay, Deborah Willis and Abigail Solomon-Godeau, as well as, colleagues Laylah Barrayn and Adama Delphine Fawundu. Latinx art historian and curator Aldeide Delgado founded WOPHA, spear-headed the conference and Co-Edited Becoming Sisters with Ana Clara Silva. Women are writing and researching our place within the history of photography and agents of change as we evolve into a dynamic and inclusive future.
